This is one of several Defender Wolf vehicles equipped for a 1998 global expedition to be led by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. At the last moment the expedition was cancelled. In the meantime, a group of Land Rover employees had been organising a spectacular expedition of their own to raise money for charity and celebrate 50 years of Land Rover. Their expedition became known as the ‘Fifty 50 Challenge’.

Land Rover provided three Freelander 1 vehicles for the Challenge, together with a fourth vehicle for use in promoting the event and helping to raise sponsorship. This show vehicle is also in our Collection. The Challenge team were also provided with one of the Fiennes expedition 110s as a support vehicle. It was re-painted gold and fitted with a roof rack, communications equipment and internal racking. This is the vehicle in our Collection and it was, appropriately enough, nicknamed ‘Goldilocks’ by the Fifty 50 Challenge team.

The Fifty 50 Challenge was a success and the team managed to visit 52 countries in 50 days and a total of 57 countries by the time the expedition ended in South Africa, and raised an astonishing £200,000 for UNICEF and other charities.
