1996 Pre-production Freelander 1 and ‘Fifty 50 Challenge’ promotional vehicle

Chassis number: SALLNAAB8TA600071

Registration number: K311 KWT

Engine type: 2.0 Diesel

Gearbox: 5 Speed

Vehicle spec:
This Freelander 1 has a two-fold history. Firstly, it is possibly the oldest surviving 3-door prototype and secondly, it was ‘dressed-up’ to promote the Land Rover Fifty 50 Challenge. This challenge involved three Freelanders together with a 110 support vehicle that set out to drive to fifty countries in fifty days, crewed by company employees who planned and executed the event to Land Rover’s 50th anniversary and to raise money for charity (we have one of these Freelanders and the support vehicle in the Collection as well).

This vehicle is almost to final production standard with only a few minor differences: the body shell is slightly different, the trim is the pre-production smooth finish and the tyres fitted were not used on production models.

This vehicle has not covered a large mileage so we assume most of its work was static display. The ‘K’ plate is clearly older than the vehicle as reflects the standard practice of registering prototype and pre-production models with an older registration as part of the ‘disguise’.
